About Deb Haaland

Deb Haaland is running for New Mexico's First Congressional District seat, and would be the first Native American woman elected to U.S. Congress. As the first Native American woman to chair a state party, Deb led New Mexico Democrats in 2016 to flip its State House from red to blue, expand the Democratic majority in the Senate, elect a Democrat Secretary of State, and hand a decisive victory to Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump.

Deb is an enrolled member of the Pueblo of Laguna, and was the first woman elected to Chair the Laguna Development Corporation Board of Directors. She is a UNM Law School graduate and single mom to Somah, who recently graduated from UNM with a BA in Theater. She is running for Congress to be a champion for all New Mexicans, to build a economy that works for everyone, invests in our public education system and debt free college, believes in science and fighting for climate change, equal pay for equal work, standing up for planed parenthood and reproductive rights, raising the minimum wage, people should be able to bargain for fair wages, seniors are entitled to retire with dignity, fighting for our veterans, and tribal sovereignty. 

About the Internship

This is a paid internship, and course credit is available if you are a UNM Student registered for the Fall 2017 semester. Campaign experience not required. We are looking for smart, energetic, and fun people who are interested in gaining experience and involvement in politics in New Mexico.  This is a great opportunity to work on a contested primary, and it's an exciting time to be involved in Democratic politics in New Mexico.

In this position you'll work with people dedicated to helping you break through to some amazing influencers in the state. If you're interested, and available for 10-15 hours a week (hours flexible) from September 1 to December 30, please email a 2-3 sentence statement on why you want to help Deb get to Congress, along with your resume to by Tuesday, August 22nd at 5pm. We will start scheduling interviews Wednesday, August 23rd.
