American Federation of Teachers New Mexico (AFT-NM) Endorses Deb!

American Federation of Teachers New Mexico Announces, Endorsement for New Mexico’s 1st Congressional District, Haaland Offers Chance for Greater Representation in Open-seat Race

Albuquerque – American Federation of Teachers New Mexico President Stephanie Ly and NM CD-1 Candidate Debra Haaland released the following statements:

“Deb Haaland rose above a crowded and well-qualified field of candidates for US House because she has shared so many of the experiences of working New Mexicans, and can authentically speak to these issues in a way that connects with her would-be constituents. Whether it was facing the challenges of securing affordable early education for her daughter by cleaning the school at nights, or experiencing an education system as an adult which has left her with high-interest and predatory loans, Deb has never waivered in her commitment and belief that despite these obstacles, pursuing her goals for a more equitable and progressive public education has been worth the struggle. In this way, she is like so many of us in New Mexico, yet, in Washington, she will be alone as the first and sole Native American member of the House of Representatives, a shameful and sobering statistic. We believe, like so many other challenges Deb has faced, that she is ready for this next challenge, and we wholeheartedly support her candidacy,” said Ly.

“Unions and vibrant public education make America strong, and it is an honor to receive the endorsement from the American Federation of Teachers New Mexico. Educators deserve our respect and support as they uplift our kids to reach their highest potential. But across the country, public education is under attack, and educators are on the front lines, striking for living wages and better funding for our public schools. I am honored to stand shoulder to shoulder with AFT New Mexico in this fight for our future. Our education system holds incredible power over our nation’s ability to thrive in all aspects of life. From infancy to bachelor’s degrees and beyond, we have the responsibility to give our students, parents, educators, and community members the very best we have to offer,” said Haaland.
