My name is Mike Honda. I served in Congress from 2001-2017, and proudly served as a Vice Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. I also served as Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus from 2004-2010, and I founded the Transgender Task Force of the LGBT Equality Caucus and the Congressional Anti-Bullying Caucus.
My granddaughter is transgender, and I can tell you we need more leaders in Congress who are committed to marginalized communities that experience violence simply because of who they are. This is why I am proud to endorse Deb Haaland for New Mexico's 1st Congressional District, and I hope you will join me today with a $25, $50, or $100 investment in her campaign.
Deb was a vocal supporter for transgender student protections in Albuquerque Public Schools, which were implemented in 2016; and, she was a spokesperson for the campaign to ban conversion therapy in New Mexico earlier this year. She also was one of the first to speak out against the ban on transgender service members. Deb has a daughter who is part of the LGBT community, and I know she will fight for the ability of all LGBT people to thrive without fear of discrimination or abuse. Deb is especially concerned with the extreme employment discrimination faced by transgender women, who face some of the most dire economic conditions in the LGBT community and nation.
Deb and I also share some of the darker moments in our nation's history. Deb's grandparents persevered through the Native American assimilation policies, and my family and I were incarcerated in internment camps during World War II – simply because of war hysteria, fear and racial prejudice. The best way for our nation to heal and learn from these kind of horrible events, which continue today, is to ensure every community in our nation has a seat and a voice at the table. Deb will bring a powerful voice that has never been heard in Congress, and we need her now more than ever.
Deb Haaland is a voice Congress and our nation needs. Please get behind her today with a $25, $50, or $100 contribution.
